Allen St. Martin was born on September 22, 1932 raised in Alexandria, LA. He married Mary Alice Kidder and they had five (5) children.
Dr. St. Martin earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Houston. He served on a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Mediterranean for 2 years after graduating from USL and continued as a Naval Reserve officer for 25 years, attaining the rank of Commander.
Dr. St. Martin began working at USL in 1969 as Dean of Student Services. In 1974, he became Dean of Community Services. His office soon grew to include not only high school relations, but also University College (USL’s evening course), DOORS (counseling for students aged 25 and older), freshmen scholarships, coordination of the USL Speakers Bureau, and many other programs. After officially retiring in 1984, he continued working part-time in the scholarship office.
Prior to his years at USL, Dr. St. Martin was principal of F.K. White and S.J. Welsh Junior High Schools in Lake Charles, and a mathematics supervisor for the Calcasieu Parish Schools System. He also taught mathematics at LaGrange High School and was named outstanding teacher in Calcasieu Parish.
Dr. St. Martin has served on the national board of directors of Theta Xi fraternity for six years and chaired the Gulf Regional Interstate Collegiate Consortium, a four-state group of 12 universities and junior colleges. He has held key positions with the Lafayette United Way drive, the Lafayette Kiwanis Club and the executive committee of Louisiana Junior Miss.
