Biographical / Historical
Louis F. Babin was born on a farm between Port Allen and Brusly, Louisiana on 1 September 1912. In 1929 his family moved to Lafayette and he attended Lafayette High School, though he dropped out to pursue a career in firefighting. He married the former Gracie Landry of Plaquemine, Louisiana; the couple had no children. Babin died 8 February 1996.
Babin’s life was dedicated to learning new advances in firefighting and every phase of fire prevention. He eventually became Fire Chief of Lafayette Parish. In 1972 he retired after 42 years with the Lafayette Fire Department. He was a member of the Hobo Volunteer Fire Company, Louisiana State Firemen’s Association, and International Association of Fire Chiefs. He was also an advisor for the Lafayette Fire Protection Association.
