The Woman’s Club of Lafayette was organized in 1897 by Mrs. T.M. Biossat as the Five O’Clock Tea Club. The group was dedicated to charity, personal improvement, and sociability. It existed under several names during the early years: The Ladies Tea Club and Women’s Literary Club. The club was formed to study literature, political economy, and many other interests. In 1901 it joined the Louisiana Federation of Women’s Clubs. Over the years the club supported scholarships and did a lot of work for Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette).
