Scope and Contents
This collection contains Dr. Drake’s lecture notes for when he was a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina, as well as outlines from his own lectures. There is also correspondence regarding journal articles and his edited book The Great South, newspaper clippings, and Drake family history documents.
Dr. Drake donated the family history portions of the collection. Dr. Michael Martin, Professor of History at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette donated the rest.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Winbourne Magruder “W.M.” Drake was born in Natchez, MS. He earned his Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from Washington and Lee University in Virginia and his doctorate from the University of North Carolina. He moved to Lafayette, LA in 1955, acting as Professor of History at Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). He specialized in American history, particularly the South. He served as professor until his retirement in 1980.
