Les Jardins de Mouton (Mouton Gardens) were created by Robert L. Mouton, a descendant of Acadians, in Lafayette, Louisiana, and comprised 55 acres of fertile soil between Mary Boulevard, Hwy 90, and the Vermilion River. The site consisted of formal gardens, two lakes, thirty-two lagoons, an outdoor theater, a Cypress swamp, Azaleas, palmettos, Louisiana Irises, magnolias, and various plants and structures. Mouton Gardens was considered one of the most beautiful gardens in the American South and has been included on the Lafayette Historic Azalea Trail.
