Scope and Contents
This addition to the collection includes handwritten letters from Joel Fletcher, Jr. to his wife, Frances Allen McLees Fletcher during the 1940s and a thank-you note from Dr. Michael Wade to Joel Fletcher III for using the letters for research on his forthcoming book about desegregation in higher education in Louisiana. Also included is correspondence from Joel Fletcher III to UL Lafayette faculty, a student who wrote a thesis about his father, and President Savoie; articles and correspondence concerning the relationship between President Fletcher and Grambling President Ralph W.E. Jones, an extension of remarks by Patrick T. Caffery, House of Representatives, and an article about Desegregation at SLI by Joel L. Fletcher III.

Joel L. Fletcher, Jr. served as an educator in Louisiana over fifty years. For most of that time, he was at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (formerly Southwestern Louisiana Institute and later the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) – twenty years in the College of Agriculture and twenty-five years as President.
