Biographical / Historical
Claire Margaret Landry, born in 1925, was the daughter of Charles Landry and Claire Escagne of Jeanerette, Louisiana. As a teenager, she created scrapbooks detailing important events in her life. These scrapbooks, filled with artifacts and St. Joseph School events, provide a glimpse of life in the small community of Jeanerette. Following graduation from St. Joseph Catholic School, Landry attended and graduated from Spencer Business College and then worked as a secretary for Dr. Eric Bertrand in New Iberia (La.). In 1946, Claire married Royal Norton Garcia, who had served in World War Two, and together they had two sons, Gerard and Donovan Garcia. Claire followed family tradition working in her father’s grocery store from 1947 until 1972. She also worked for Weill’s Ben Franklin retail store and at the Iberia Savings Bank, where she retired. She died in 2012.
