Biographical / Historical
Gabriel Rousseau de Villejoin was one of seven military captains who first arrived at Louisbourg in Nova Scotia. He was married to Marie Joseph Bertrand and they had five children together before he died in 1718. De Villejoin also served on the Superior Council at Port Toulouse in 1717. Gabriel Rousseau, the oldest son, was married twice. The first marriage was to Anne Angelique de Gannes de Falaise in 1733, resulting in five children. When Anne died in 1752, Gabriel married Barbe Delort in 1753, resulting in four children.
Gabriel and Marie Rousseau’s second child was Margueritte, who married Robert Duhaget in 1737. Margueritte and Robert had no children. Gabriel and Marie’s third child was Michel Rousseau d’Orfontaine, who was an “enseigne en pied” in Louisbourg, lieutenant in Canada, and later an aide-major in France.
Marie Josephe Bertrand remarried in 1729 to Lieutenant Charles Joseph d’Ailleboust. The two had three children together including Marie-Charlotte, Louise Marguerite, and Charles Michel. Michel Rousseau, Gabriel’s grandson, later moved to Cayes du Fond, St. Domingue, which is present-day Haiti. His son Gregoire Michel later moved to St. Martinville in the 1820s, becoming the first sheriff of Lafayette Parish.
