Biographical / Historical
James McGaugh Peek was born May 20, 1916 in Decatur, Arkansas to Samuel D. Peek and Effie Leforse Peek. He married Sadie Louise Mouton on December 23, 1950 and they had a daughter, Julie Louise Peek. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Peek received a B.S. degree from the University of Arkansas in 1939 and a M.A. from the University of Missouri in 1948. Shortly thereafter, he joined the faculty of Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) as Assistant Professor of Agronomy, later rising to the rank of Associate Professor. He was a charter member of the Louisiana Turf Grass Association and a member of the American Society of Agronomy. James Peek passed away on May 29, 1970.
