The Lanor Records recording label was founded by John Levence "Lee" Lavergne (1932-1998) of Church Point, Louisiana in 1960. For nearly 40 years, Lee Lavergne produced recordings for notable Louisiana Cajun, swamp pop, rhythm and blues, Creole and zydeco, and blues musicians on the Lanor label. In the 1960s and 1970s, without his own studio facilities, he enlisted recording studio services in Louisiana, including J. D. Miller's studio (Crowley), Goldband Records (Lake Charles), Cosimo Matassa Recording Studios (New Orleans), and elsewhere in southeastern states. In the 1970's, Lavergne opened Sound Center Recorders, a music retail business, in Church Point. Later, Lavergne built the Lanor Records and Sound Center Recorders studio in the 1981-1982 period, adding it to the list of local Louisiana recording studio venues. Lavergne continued to produce and promote the diverse sounds and genres of Louisiana music and musicians and expand the Lanor Records catalog until his death in January 1998. The company was sold in 1998 to its second owners.

Lanor Records and Sound Center Recorders was purchased by the Murry family of Jennings, Louisiana in April 1998. Lanor Records became a family-owned and operated business, managed by Bobby and Patricia Murry, along with their sons, Todd and Doug Murry, recording engineers and producers. In 1999, the first CD release of the new owners, engineered by the Murry brothers won four Cajun French Music Association (CFMA) “Le Cajun” music awards in Lafayette, LA. After 10 successful years, the Murry family retired from the music and recording business. The Lanor label and published works have been distributed and licensed nationally and internationally, including Europe and Australia.

The University Libraries Special Collections acquired the archival collection of historical business records, promotional materials, and artifacts in 2010.
