Biographical / Historical
Barbara Furnas Nelson was born 21 September 1913 in Shawnee, OK, and raised in Wichita, KS. Her parents were James and Leah Furnas. She graduated from Friends University in Wichita. She worked as a secretary for Cessna Aviation and was an All-American basketball player before her marriage to Ira Schreiber Nelson. They had four children.
Barbara Nelson worked for the Horticulture Department at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) as a librarian and instructor. She was a member of the Society for Louisiana Irises, Louisiana Society for Horticultural Research and other horticultural societies. She grew Louisiana Irises for more than 25 years.
