Biographical / Historical
In 1909, Frederick (Fritz) Huber, Jr. and his father Frederick Huber, Sr. opened the Jennings Nursery. They got started by driving a wagon to Welsh, about 12 miles, digging up a hedge of citrus trifoliata and grafting satsuma stock. They traveled to various places to get cuttings from shrubs that they considered worthwhile.
The early nursery was a small lot next to their first home on the main street of Jennings. Later they developed a 28-acre tract that was Fritz's home place. As the nursery continued to grow, their final location was a 70-acre tract on Highway 90, outside of Jennings. Fritz belonged to many organizations, including American Association of Nurserymen, Texas Association of Nurserymen, Louisiana State Horticultural Association, Inc., American Horticultural Society, Louisiana Camellia Society, American Camellia Society, Louisiana Pecan Growers Association, Southwest Louisiana Nurserymen's Association, and Southern Nurserymen's Association. Through these he enriched his knowledge of plant materials, and became a well-known and respected figure in these fields.
Frederick (Fritz) Huber, Jr. was born in 1886. He married Regina Simon in 1924. They had two children, a daughter, Catherine, and a son, Frederick Felix (Fritz). He and his wife also had six grandchildren. He died in 1958 in Jennings, Louisiana.
