Dr. Holmes never forgot his Louisiana roots, and studying Louisiana plant and wildlife remained one of his great passions. This collection contains two unpublished manuscripts he wrote on Louisiana plants and animals.

This collection contains the personal and working papers of Mertzweiller, mostly focusing on his work with irises. These include records of his hybridizing experiments, material related to organizations for which he was involved, collaborative efforts, and photographs of iris blooms, plants, and collectors dated from the 1950s onward.

This collection contains correspondence, minutes of the Arboretum Committee, reports, constitution and by-laws. It also contains the plans for organizing the New Orleans Botanical Garden and other miscellaneous materials.

Scope and Contents This collection contains records for both organizations. Most of the correspondence comes from the Secretary's files. Someone connected with the University of Southwestern Louisiana (Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) usually held this position: Ira S.
