Biographical / Historical
Theobald Joseph was born on November 6, 1867 in St. Martinville, Louisiana. He was the son of Marie Ameline Stephanie Duchamp De Chastaigné and Arthur Labbe from the Isle of Martinique. He was married and had 13 children, 33 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren at the time of his death. He died at the age of 81. Mr. T.J. Labbe was a druggist and was also interested in farming and politics. He served as a mayor of St. Martinville for 2 terms, being elected in 1896 and 1898. In 1900 he was elected to the State Senate and served for eight years. During his years as state senator he introduced the bill creating Southwestern Louisiana Institute of Lafayette. Always interested in education he is credited with establishing the St. Martin Parish school system.
