Biographical / Historical
Mathé Allain was born November 15, 1928 in Casablanca, Morocco. She received two bachelor’s degrees (first in biology-psychology, the second in history), a master’s degree in French, and her doctorate in history, all from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (later University of Southwestern Louisiana, now University of Louisiana at Lafayette). She taught French at USL from 1963 until her retirement in 2001, specializing in the history of French in Louisiana.
Dr. Allain received numerous awards in her career, including the USL Distinguished Professor Award in 1984, and the McGinty Lifetime Meritorious Award from the Louisiana History Association in 1997. She was also a decorated Palmes Académiques by the French government.
